ASR Primer!
SpeakMediaASR is one of the best speech recognition engines available on the market today. As good as it is, it's still not infallible. The key to achieving consistent recognition, is simply to speak clearly at a normal rate, think of the news guy reading the news if that helps! Also if you can't hear the person next to you talking normally, then don't expect the ASR to recognize you either! SpeakMediaASR is noise robust and will operate in moderately noisy environments, such as in traffic.
Recognition State
In the case that the ASR rejects a command, it will beep three times to signal that it didn't hear you clearly enough and will adjust itself appropriately. In the event of a rejected command just reactivate the ASR and restate your command normally, don't yell at it. There are a number of reasons why a command may be rejected and it's often not the fault of the ASR engine. Trouble shooting is fairly easy.
- Make sure you're issuing a valid command
- Make sure your microphone is selected in the recording properties of the sound panel, by right clicking on the Speaker icon in the system tray then "Open volume control" followed by Options Menu, select Properties and select the Record option. Alternativley, press the Start button, look to the lower right, press run and type in "SndVol32" to open the sound manager then click Options followed by Properties and select the Recording option
- Make sure your microphone is working properly, either run sound recorder or make a Skype test call: its often the easiest way to check if your microphone is working
- If none of those solutions resolve the problem, you may need to seek technical assitance!
Microphones
SpeakMediaASR will operate with a broad range of inexpensive desktop and headset microphones, though higher accuracy will be achieved with headsets made for Speech Recognition. Just beacuse a microphone is expensive doesn't mean its good! Some microphones systems use software DSP which can actually make them perform worse in some instances. It's a good idea to check around for whats available. Please note SpeakMediaASR doesn't currently support the use of Bluetooth microphones.
